University Consortium of Pori celebrates its 20th anniversary

In 2024, the University Consortium of Pori celebrates its 20th anniversary. Over the past two decades, UCPori has developed into a versatile influencer in the Satakunta region. From the very beginning, its activities have focused on multidisciplinary education and research and strong cooperation with other actors developing the region.

Education and research since the 1980s

University activities started in Pori already in 1983, when Tampere University of Technology launched research and education activities in the area. The Turku School of Economics followed in 1984. In 2000, the universities moved under one roof to the historic factory area of Puuvilla.

The modern university consortiums were established in Finland in 2004, and since then university cooperation has continued under the name of University Consortium of Pori. Along the way, operations have evolved and at times there have been five host universities at UCPori. As a result of university mergers, UCPori now has two host universities, with students, teachers and researchers forming a close-knit community.

Tampere University offers degrees in technology and social sciences in Pori, while the Turku School of Economics offers Bachelor's and Master's degrees in economics at its Pori unit. In addition, the University of Turku's degree programme in Digital Culture, Landscape and Cultural Heritage offers degree programmes of Bachelor and Master of Arts. All units also offer the possibility of postgraduate studies up to doctoral level. In addition to degree programmes, continuing education is an integral part of UCPori's activities, with management training courses starting every year.

Collaborative, multidisciplinary research is one of the strengths of UCPori. Pori has more than 10 research groups that carry out regional, national and international research. Tampere University carries out research in the fields of management, information technology and social sciences. The University of Turku has a large number of research groups in business studies, digital culture, cultural heritage and landscape studies.

Working for the regional university education

There are six university consortiums in Finland – in addition to Pori in Lahti, Mikkeli, Kajaani, Kokkola and Seinäjoki. Their activities are very diverse, tailored to the needs of each region. Regional interaction and wide-ranging cooperation are at the heart of their activities.

During the 20th anniversary year, the university consortiums will work particularly closely together and will also celebrate the milestone together.

– 20 years is a great achievement for the university consortiums. In the future, the aim is to further develop university education and research in the regions, says Katariina Yrjönkoski, Director of UCPori.

In 2024, UCPori's 20th anniversary celebrations will be linked to the Academic "Wappu" in April-May and the TiedeAreena event in September, but the festive atmosphere will be reflected in the UCPori communications throughout the year.
